It's more than 2,000 miles long.  It follows a path along the ridges and valleys of the eastern portion of America.  Thousands of people hike along its paths each year.  Some spend half a year doing thru-hikes - from top to bottom, or vice versa.  It's the Appalachian Trail!

The Appalachian Trail can be accessed with about an hour's drive from Waynesville, NC.  Take Highway 19 from Waynesville, towards Cherokee.  Pick up Highway 441 North.  It's a windy drive up the mountain to the Trail entrance at Newfound Gap. Check out the Appalachian Trail Conservancy website for more information and an interactive map.

The Appalachian Trail winds its way through Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. There is an extension to the Appalachian Trail, and it is known as the international Appalachian Trail. This unofficial portion extends north into Canada until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the world's long distance hikers traverse this trail and to others (Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail), earning the title of Triple Crown hikers.

How Long is the Appalachian Trail?A map of the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail is about 2180 miles long. It extends through 14 states, a long the Appalachian Mountains. The southern most point is at Springer Mountain in Georgia, while Katahdin, Maine represents the Appalachian trails northern most point. Most of the trail leaves you walking through wilderness, although you will wind your way through a number of towns. Expect also cross several rivers and roads during your journey along the Appalachian Trail.

About 3 million people walk along parts of the marked Appalachian Trail. Each year, a few thousand people from around the world attempt to walk the entire length - something known as a thru-hike.

Completed in 1937 by the National Park Service, the Appalachian Trail is kept tidy by several thousand volunteers, the National Park Service itself, and the US forest service, as well as a number of other state organizations. There are also 31 clubs or groups located along the trail, which contribute manpower to keeping it clean and functional. There are about 250 shelters along the trail.

About 550 miles of the Appalachian Trail extends through the state of Virginia (the most), space while West Virginia, only has about 4 miles of the trail. Space the most difficult part of the trail to hike can be found in the states of Maine and New Hampshire. The easiest portions of the Appalachian Trail to hike include West Virginia and Maryland. For those who hike the entire trail, they will see an elevation gain of about 450,000 feet in total (that's about 16 times the height of Mount Everest). Of course, no one is climbing 450,000 feet into the sky!

If you're looking to connect with nature, there are plenty of amazing animals and plants that can be found along the Appalachian Trail. From porcupines, snakes, black bears and moose to skunk cabbage and flame Azalea, you will find more than enough flora and fauna along the trail.

There are hundreds of access points along the Appalachian Trail, many of which are near towns and cities along the Appalachian mountain chain. There are basically three types of people who walk along the Appalachian Trail: flip flopper's, who hike the entire trail a section at a time; thru-hikers, who hike the entire trail at once; and section hikers, who hike different areas of the Appalachian Trail over several years, eventually completing it. Less than 25% of thru-hikers actually complete the journey, with most. Starting in the South and heading north.
