The Pisgah National Forest portion of Haywood County, North Carolina is home to the famous Cold Mountain

February 11, 2017 by Rick Morris

Part of the Great Balsam Mountains, Cold Mountain is 6,030 feet in elevation, raising above the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachians.  It is located about 15 miles southeast of Waynesville NC, or about 30 miles from Asheville, NC.

Unlike what some may believe - perhaps because of the movie bearing the same name - no one lives on Cold Mountain as the land is owned by the government.

Cold Mountain first belongs to the Shining Rock Wilderness, which is a section of the Pisgah National Forest.  This land previously belonged to George Vanderbilt, wealthy heir to the Vanderbilt railroad and shipping fortunes, and builder of the Biltmore House, America's largest private home.  It was sold at just $5 per acre to the U.S. Forest Service by his wife upon Vanderbilt's death.  This was a gesture that became the Pisgah National Forest, the first on the east coast of America.

Cold Mountain Book and Movie

Charles Frazier wrote a book called Cold Mountain that was published in 1997.  The novel was turned into a movie in 2003, and quickly became a hit, fueled by actors Jude Law and Nicole Kidman.  Though filmed in Romania, the notoriety from the movie placed Cold Mountain in the public eye.

In 1946, a B-25 Mitchell piloted by Major General Paul Wurtsmith (Army Air Forces) crashed into Cold Mountain, killing him and everyone aboard the aircraft.  He was en-route to MacDill Field, Florida following a visit with his family in Michigan.  During his return to Florida, he was flying low, below 6,000 feet, and crashed into the mountain.  His remains were recovered and burial was at Arlington.  An airbase in Oscoda, Michigan was named for Wurtsmith.  Many people have trekked the tough dirt trail Cold Mountain in search of the crash site and still find pieces of the aircraft.

Visiting Cold Mountain can be either easy or difficult - it depends on how you want to experience it.  The easiest (and safest) way is to view the mountain from afar.  There is no better place to do that than on the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 411.  Check out the mountain and get a photograph in front of the Parkway sign bearing the name.  Another good location is from Mount Pisgah's peak, a 5,700-foot mountain in itself.  Drive four more miles to milepost 407, grab your boots and walk the 1.5-mile trail to the summit.

If hiking is your thing, you are going to love this one. The Art Loeb Trail trailhead is located in beside the parking lot of Camp Daniel Boone, a boy scout camp near Lake Logan in Bethel and Canton, NC.  A covered bulletin board marks the entrance.  Cold Mountain's peak can be achieved after rising through thick forest, low laurel, and rocky ledges some 6 1/2 miles of hiking.
