With all the beautiful mountains around here, you would certainly expect Waynesville NC to be home to some of the best hiking trails. Choose from the Great Smoky Mountains and/or Blue Ridge Mountains that surround the town. The famous Appalachian Trail runs nearby as well. No trip to Waynesville should be without a strenuous hike up to the peak of Cold Mountain!
Here are several additional hiking trails you should check out...
Great Smoky Mountains National Park - Along the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, this is America's most visited national park. A half million acres of ancient mountains, flora and fauna. Popular attractions include Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome, Cataloochee Valley, and Newfound Gap. More about the Great Smoky Mountains.
Graveyard Fields Hiking Trail - At just over 3 miles, this trail is fairly easy to hike. Beautiful waterfalls at the base of the hike, either to the Lower or Upper. Stop along the way for blueberries during early autumn. Trail head is at Graveyard Fields Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 418.8. More Info.
Boogerman Hiking Trail - 4.2 miles. Easy rating with an elevation gain of less than 1,000 feet. Known for beautiful trees. Trailhead at Caldwell Fork Trail. Take a day hike from Cataloochee Campground for 7.5 miles roundtrip. More Info.

Sunburst Swimming Hole - Well, this really isn't a hiking trail, but it is a semi-popular swimming hole famous for its days as a pool for the local paper mill's early workers dating back to 1900. It's fresh, cold water! Visit Waynesville or Canton area during the summer and you must check out this swimming hole! There's a campground nearby (Sunburst Campground). Located up Highway 215 from Canton/Bethel/Waynesville, past Lake Logan, near foot of the Blue Ridge Parkway. More Info.
Blue Ridge Parkway - Though the Blue Ridge Parkway started as two separate construction projects, one by Virginia and one by North Carolina, it connects the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (NC) with the Shenandoah National Park (VA). It's not an official national park, but you would think it as so.
Cataloochee Valley - A once small community, now it's popular for the elk that were reintroduced. It's remote and filled with mountain history. Several old buildings and restored cabins can be found here. Look for deer, black bears, turkey, butterflies, etc. More Info.
Rough Creek Watershed Trail System - 870 acres of protected land near Canton, NC. Located along the southern side of the Newfound Mountain Range, there are 3 trails of 10 miles altogether. For hiking and mountain biking. More Info.
