Blue Ridge Parkway

May 28, 2014 - It's nearly 500 miles long and runs along the ridges of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in America's east coast Appalachian Mountain chain.  Mile after mile of breath-taking beauty, panorama, flora and fauna.  People from around the country and world travel here annually for 100-mile views, red and orange leaves of Autumn, and fresh air.  It's the Blue Ridge Parkway!


Blue Ridge Mountains

Waynesville NC is situated within the Blue Ridge Mountains, as part of the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States.  The mountains get their name form the bluish haze when viewed from far away.  Actually, the trees the make up the Blue Ridge Mountains give off isoprene, an organic compound emitted by numerous varieties of trees.  The mountain range is famous for the 469-mile winding, scenic road, the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The Parkway follows along the ridge lines of the mountains, north to south, somewhat in tandem with the Appalachian Trail.


Mast General Store Waynesville NC

On the National Register of Historic Places, Mast General Store in Waynesville NC has been around since 1883.  There are 8 stores in the area, but the one in Waynesville is a must see!  At the Gateway to the Smokies, this 1930s mountain mercantile, with its antique cabinetry, well-oiled floors and original mezzanine, is packed with provisions for the entire family.  Look downstairs for old-fashioned candy and timeless toys.  Charles Kuralt once said, "All general stores are satisfying to visit, but one of them, the Mast Store, is a destination."


Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail winds its way through Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. There is an extension to the Appalachian Trail, and it is known as the international Appalachian Trail. This unofficial portion extends north into Canada until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the world's long distance hikers traverse this trail and to others (Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail), earning the title of Triple Crown hikers.


Historic Shelton House - Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts

On the National Register of Historic Places, the Shelton House transforms you back in time.  In this Charleston-style farmhouse you'll discover crafts, sculptures made of porcelain, hand-woven quilts and baskets, pottery works, furniture and more from years gone by.  Built in 1875, the Shelton House displays an assembly of Native American (Cherokee and Southwester) teases the imagination as to how the area appeared and functioned in the 1800s and earlier.
